Russia (2018) and Qatar (2022) win World Cup race

Source: http://soccernet.espn.go.com

Russia and Qatar will make their debuts as World Cup hosts after FIFA's 22-member panel voted to award the nations the 2018 and 2022 finals respectively.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced the eagerly anticipated results in Zurich, Switzerland, on Thursday afternoon.

Russia beat competition from England, Netherlands/Belgium and Spain/Portugal. Deputy prime minister Igor Shuvalov celebrated by saying: "You have entrusted us with the FIFA World Cup for 2018 and I can promise, we all can promise, you will never regret it. Let us make history together.''

Qatar has been awarded the 2022 World Cup finals after seeing off challenges from Australia, Japan, South Korea and the USA - taking the tournament to the Middle East for the first time.

The FIFA executive committee's decision comes as a slight surprise after the USA and Australia bids had been highly-fancied.

Qatar's staging of the tournament had come in for some criticism because of the weather in the country during June and July - temperatures can rise as high as 50 degrees Celsius - while the close proximity of the stadiums had also raised some questions.

Qatar's Emir Sheikh Mohammad bin Hamad Al-Thani said: "On behalf of millions of people living in the Middle East, thank you. Thank you for believing in us, thank you for having such bold vision. Thank you also for acknowledging this is the right time for the Middle East. We have a date with history which is summer 2022."

England's bid to host the 2018 finals, which may have suffered from a backlash against corruption investigations into FIFA members by BBC Panorama and the Sunday Times in the last two months, secured just two votes and was knocked out in the first round.

England won only one other vote apart from Britain's FIFA vice-president Geoff Thompson. In the first round Holland/Belgium secured four, Spain/Portugal seven and Russia nine. Thompson, formerly the FA chairman for eight years, said promises to England had been broken.

"I cannot believe what has happened, and I am naturally very, very disappointed,'' he said. "The votes that were promised clearly didn't materialise. I never imagined we would go out in the first round.''

England's defeat came despite an impressive presentation that was described by Blatter as "excellent and remarkable".

Russia eventually won the right to host the 2018 tournament with an outright majority in the second round of voting. In the 2022 contest, Qatar beat the USA in the third and final round of voting.

David Beckham, a prominent member of England's bid team as well as a former national team captain, said: "I think the bid team have done everything possible. We couldn't have got a better bid. We're disappointed but we wish Qatar and Russia the very best. They're two great countries and I'm sure they'll make FIFA very proud."

The Spanish football federation (RFEF), which had tabled a joint bid for the 2018 World Cup with Portugal, offered its best wishes to Russia and Qatar.

"The Spanish football federation wishes to extent its most sincere congratulations to the football federations of Russia and Qatar after being chosen to organise the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, respectively,'' the RFEF said in a statement.

The head of the U.S. World Cup bid team admitted defeat to Qatar was "very difficult to take''. The North American nation had been considered a front-runner to host the finals in 12 years' time.

US Soccer president Sunil Gulati said: "There's no way around it: I am disappointed." But he added: "Even though our bid did not win, the future of soccer is bright in the United States.''

And just like that, all three of the major game consoles now have some semblance of motion controls. Unlike the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation Move, however, Microsoft's Kinect for Xbox 360 opts to get rid of buttons altogether, relying on body gestures and voice commands. As the (estimated to be $500 million) ad campaign says, "you are the controller" -- for better and for worse. Read on for our full review!

MAHA 2010

The Malaysian Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) is Asia’s largest and most comprehensive showground and exposition facility. Owned by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, Malaysia, MAEPS was conceived on the same platform which the Ministry has used to successfully rebrand the agriculture sector as evidenced by its motto “Agriculture is business”.

Truly, there is no other venue in Asia so perfectly suited to spearheading primarily the promotion of the business of agriculture, the agro-based sector and secondly other industries. The 100-hectare site is an exposition and convention facility with a difference. MAEPS is the ideal location for your next event. MAEPS is situated on the nothern top of the Malaysia’s Administration Capital, Putrajaya and is strategically located midway of Kuala Lumpur International Airport and the city centre of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

OBJECTIVE

  • To provide a platform of meetings for the sellers and the buyers
  • To promote agriculture as a career, that could provide promising future and guaranteed lucrative
income in order to attract entrepreneurs and the young generation

Note from Bahagia Keselamatan UPM

Branson loses the bet, AirAsia prepares for flight with skirt-wearing billionaire

PETALING JAYA: It looks like Virgin Group boss Sir Richard Branson will be dressing up as an AirAsia stewardess after all for losing a bet with Lotus Racing team principal Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes over which of their teams would do better in the just-concluded Formula 1 season.

The two men had made a bet at the start of the season in March that the loser must serve as a “stewardess” on the winner’s airline.

Despite both teams failing to score any championship points throughout the season, Malaysian-backed Lotus Racing finished ahead of Virgin Racing in all but two races (in Italy and Singapore).

After the season’s final race at the sensational Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, Lotus finished in 10th spot while Virgin finished last among the 12 teams.

Fernandes said: “It’s time for Richard to start preparing himself for some hard work ... and the likely pain of a pair of high heels!”

The date of the Kuala Lumpur-London AirAsia flight has yet to be set, but seats will be auctioned off and the money given to Branson’s chosen charity.

“We have agreed that we will run an online charity auction for the seats on the route to raise money for a charity of Richard’s choice and give fans of both teams the chance to be on the flight.

“The aim is to raise as much money as we can for a good cause ... So the discomfort Richard will have to go through will be worth as much as it possibly can be.”

The friendly wager aside, Fernandes was delighted to have achieved the team’s primary target to be the best team among the newcomers.

Besides Lotus and Virgin, the other new team on the grid was the Spanish Hispania Racing (HRT) team, which finished 11th.

“I am completely relieved, completely ecstatic, happy and vindicated in making the decision to go into F1,” said Fernandes, who had the support of Malaysian conglomerates like Naza, Proton and Maxis to bring Lotus back into the premier racing fraternity after a 16-year hiatus.

“To complete 19 races and finish in 10th spot, after having just five months to build the car, is something that is truly magical.”

“This is the first chapter of a long career ahead and we will create our own future, destiny and history from here,” said Fernandes.
